Root Canal Treatment (Endodontics)

Endodontics is a branch of dentistry that deals with the study and treatment of the dental pulp and surrounding tissues. The dental pulp is the soft tissue that contains blood vessels, nerves, and connective tissue, and is located in the center of the tooth. Endodontic procedures are primarily aimed at treating diseases or injuries that affect the dental pulp, such as tooth decay, dental trauma, or infections.

Endodontic treatments are commonly known as root canal treatments, and involve removing the infected or damaged dental pulp from inside the tooth, cleaning the root canals, and filling the space with an inert material to prevent further infection. Root canal treatment is a relatively common dental procedure that can save a tooth that would otherwise need to be extracted.

The following are some of the common endodontic procedures:

• Root canal therapy: This procedure involves removing the infected or inflamed pulp from inside the tooth and cleaning the root canals to prevent the infection from spreading. The root canals are then filled with an inert material to prevent re-infection.
• Endodontic surgery: In some cases, a surgical approach may be required to treat an infection that has not responded to conventional root canal treatment. This may involve removing the tip of the root and cleaning the surrounding tissue to remove the infection.
• Trauma management: Endodontic treatment may be required in cases of dental trauma, such as a cracked or fractured tooth. The damaged pulp may need to be removed, and the tooth restored with a crown or other dental restoration.
• Retreatment: In some cases, a previously treated tooth may become re-infected. Retreatment involves removing the filling material and cleaning the root canals again to prevent further infection.
• Diagnosis: Endodontists are also trained to diagnose and treat dental pain that is not easily identified. They use advanced imaging techniques, such as digital radiography, to identify the source of the problem and recommend the appropriate treatment.

Endodontic treatment can help to preserve a damaged or infected tooth and prevent the need for extraction. It is important to seek prompt dental care if you experience dental pain or other symptoms that may indicate a problem with the dental pulp.
